Gum Disease: Causes and Symptoms

Gum disease is a bacterial growth around the teeth which causes swelling, soreness or infection in tissues surrounding the teeth. Gum disease is mainly of two types, Gingivitis or Periodontitis. While gingivitis is a mild form of periodontal disease, periodontitis is a more serious type of gum disease and can lead to tooth extraction.

The root cause of gum disease is plaque, which is a layer of bacteria that gets formed on the teeth due to leftover food particles. When plaque hardens, it can create a substance called tartar. Tartar can only be removed by a professional dentist using an ultrasonic scaler, which is a type of instrument that can be used to remove the tartar and bad particles from the surface of the teeth. This process is called scaling and it uses ultrasonic vibrations in order to work and consists of a jet spray that uses water as a cooling agent. Scaling is a painless procedure and its essential that you visit your dentist for a scaling at least once a year in order to prevent a buildup of tartar. Some symptoms of gum disease include red or swollen gums, loosening of teeth and or bleeding gums.
