FMR Dentures

Full Mouth Rehabilitation is of increasing importance, as it is through this procedure that patients with dentitions which are in different stages of degeneration or loss can be restored to functional dental health. The gradual wearing off of the chewing surfaces of teeth is a normal physiological process during the lifetime of a patient. Full mouth, rehabilitation, reconstruction and restoration are terms often used interchangeably to describe the process of rebuilding or simultaneously restoring all of the teeth in both the upper and lower jaws. Full Mouth rehabilitation aims to convert all forces which are unfavorable on the teeth, into favorable forces which allow normal functioning of the dentition and induce healthy dental condition. These forces which are favorable increase tolerance of the supporting structures to masticatory forces and this creates a physiologic condition that has far-reaching effects. The ultimate aim of full mouth rehabilitation is the restoration of healthy functioning of the masticating system.

Dentures Dentures (also known as false teeth) are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth, and are supported by the surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity.

There are three types of dentures: Partial denture: Are dentures which replace a few missing teeth while some natural teeth still remain. A removable partial denture or bridge usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is sometimes connected by metal framework (cast –partial denture) that holds the denture in place in the mouth. Not only does a partial denture fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from changing position. A precision partial denture is removable and has internal attachments rather than clasps that attach to the adjacent crowns. This is a more natural-looking appliance.

Complete denture: Are dentures which are made when the patient has lost all the teeth. Complete dentures can be either conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are fabricated once the oral tissues have healed completely after removal of all teeth, while immediate dentures are made in advance and can be used immediately after the removal of teeth. As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures compared with conventional dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process and generally should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.

Semi Fixed Dentures: Which Are Implant Supported/Implant Retained dentures: A new type of denture gaining popularity is the Implant Retained Denture that can be used to replace some or all teeth. This type of denture comprises of metallic implants that are embedded into the bone to give support for artificial dentures, making them semi-fixed in the mouth. Such Dentures have better retention and adaptability.

Things to remember for denture wearers: Be sure to leave your dentures out overnight. Dentures should be stored in a covered container with the cleaning solution when not in the mouth. Generally the upper denture will have a better fit than the lower. One must learn how to use and retain the lower denture. Initially, activities like talking, reading aloud and eating must be done alone. This will allow you to avoid embarrassing moments as you learn to use your new dentures. Avoid very hot food. Your temperature sensitivity will have been changed by the dentures covering your jaws. In time, owing to natural restructuring of the jaw, your dentures may require realigning. Have your dentures, mouth and adjacent structures, checked by your dentist at least once a year. The needs and nature of each patient vary, therefore, check with your dentist about anything not covered here. Dentures can be regarded as the best dentistry treatment option for people who cannot choose dental implants and/or other fixed treatment options for reasons like age or health conditions. Dentures can also fulfil the need of a cosmetic dental treatment giving the patient a better appearance, better look and their confidence back.
